Ecuador football
For many years, Ecuador were one of the weaker sides in CONMEBOL, however it has recently enjoyed more success, making their debut World Cup qualification in 2002, and qualifying again for the 2006 finals of the football world cup in which they made the second round, losing to England as Beckham scored a great free kick. Detractors of the side have on occasions sought to attribute their success to their advantage in acclimatisation to playing matches at altitude in Quito but success in qualification for, and performances in, two FIFA World Cup finals have lessened this.
