Chile's finest World Cup result was a third position finish in 1962, when Chile was the home country. Chile lost 4-2 to eventual winners Brazil in a semifinals game, however beat Yugoslavia 1-0 in the third place match.

Chile was one of the original members of CONMEBOL which also had Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and took part in the first Copa America competition in 1916. In Copa America play, Chile has ended in 4 finals but has suffered defeat in each appearance. Along with Ecuador and Venezuela, they are one of 3 South American nations who have never won the tournament.
