Austria football
Austria's finest score came during the 1954 world cup, when they finished third after suffering defeat in the semifinal to eventual winners Germany. It was their greatest result ever, and proved to be the last time for decades that Austria reached the end round of a major competition.
Over the years, a strong yet mainly lopsided rivalry with Germany developed.
uring the Football World Cup 1982 in Spain, Austria and Germany met again, in the last match of Round one, after the other two sides in their group had played a day before.
Austria suffered elimination by losing to France in the Second phase group stage of three sides.
In the 1990's, led by forward Toni Polster, Austria qualified for the 1990 World Cup, but were eliminated in the first round.
Worse was to follow as the lost 1-0 against the Faroe Islands in the qualifying campaign for the European Championship 1992, considered the worst result in any Austrian team sport ever, and one of the biggest upsets in footballing history.
In the 1998 world cup finals, Austria were drawn in Group B with Italy, Cameroon and Chile. Their appearance proved to be short as they could not survive the group stage,
