Sri Lanka football
Sri Lanka was known as the Ceylon national football side until 1972, when Ceylon changed name to Sri Lanka.
A member of the AFC, the national side have yet to make their debut appearance in FIFA World Cup or AFC Asian Cup championship. As is true elsewhere on the sub-continent, top-level football in Sri Lanka is no where near as good as the country's test cricket side. However, the side did qualify for the second phase of Asian qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, leaving their backers hope for a more promising future.
