Bangladesh football
Apart from victories over Indonesia and Thailand in their debut World Cup qualification phase in 1986, Bangladesh has struggled to place itself on the footballing map. At the regional level, they have also stayed in the second echelon while in Asia, the side is frequently trying to avoid being the wooden spoon of their section.
However, the Association is now working hand in hand with the Vision Asia agenda which will see it restructuring its domestic divisions as well as initiating more young programmes. These initiatives are coming at a good period for football in Bangladesh.
Football in Bangladesh has a large following which was exemplified when the national side made history in their win at the South Asian Football Federation Cup in 2003. The South Asia side enjoyed victory in the final through penalties over Maldives in fromt of 50,000 home fans.
