Afghanistan football
The Afghanistan national side play their home matches in Ghazi National Olympic Stadium which was built in the 1920s with capacity of over 55,000. The Afghan national football team is also called Team Melli.
Afghanistan's finest performance in international tournament was in the 1951 Asian matches when they finished 4th. At present Afghanistan has low participation levels in soccer compared to many countries, and the match was not encouraged under the Taliban regime from 1996 to 2001. Afghanistan played no world football fixtures from 1984 to 2003, since when the side rose to a best of 173rd in the FIFA World Rankings.
