Euro 84– Star players
Michel Platini - France
Platini was voted European footballer of the year for three consecutive seasons and won the European Championship in 1984 with France. During the tournament, Platini scored nine goals including 2 hat-tricks. He participated in three world cups, 1978, 1982 and 1990. Between 1979-1982 he played for French outfit Saint Etienne, helping them win the French league. He moved to Juventus in 1982 and won the Italian Cup, Italian league, European Cup Winners Cup, European super Cup and the European Cup. He retired from the game in 1987.
Preben Elkjær Larsen – Denmark
He played a vital role during Euro 84 for France, scoring on two occasions for the Danish team. Denmark were impressive finally succumbing to Spain in the semi-finals on penalties. He also participated for Denmark in Euro 88 and the 1986 world cup finals. He averaged more than one goal a match while playing for his country in 69 appearances he scored 38 goals. He retired from football in 1990.
Rudi Voller- Germany
Voller’s international career began in 1982. His first major tournament was the European championships in France in 1984; he scored two goals and introduced himself on to the centre stage. Voller played for West Germany in Euro 88 and Euro 92 and was member of their world cup winning side of 1990. In fact Voller’s wealth of world cup experienced spanned between the 1986 to 1994 world cups. Voller played on ninety occasions for the Germans, scoring 47 goals in total, an average of more than one goal per game.
Voller played his club football in both Germany and Italy. He played for Werder Bremen and Roma.
Tamagnini Nené - Portugal
Nene helped Portugal reach the semi finals of the 1988 European Championships, scoring the winning goal in a group match against Romania. He began his career with benfica in 1966 and played there for an astonishing twenty years. He won the Portuguese league with benfica eleven times and is to this day still a household name there. He made his international debut in 1971 and retired from international football after Euro 84. His international career spanned out for 13 years between 1971- 1984. He was capped on 66 occasions for his nation scoring 22 goals. |
