Euro 80 – Star players

Klaus Allofs – West Germany
Allofs was the top scorer of the 1980 European Championships scoring three goals; they won the tournament in a final match against Belgium. He was capped 56 times for the German’s scoring 17 goals. He played his club football in France for Marseille and Bordeaux, before ending his playing career back in Germany with Werder Bremen. In 1992 he won the European Cup Winners Cup with Werder Bremen.

Zdeněk Nehoda – Czechoslovakia
He scored two goals in the 1980 European championships which helped the Czech’s reach the semi finals, scoring against Greece and Holland in their group matches. He also scored in the penalty shoot out against Italy in the third place playoff for the Euro 80 finals. He was capped on 90 occasions for his country scoring 31 goals. He was an integral part of Czechoslovakia’s team during the 1982 world cup finals.

Horst Hrubesch – West Germany
He was a key member of the German’s European Championship winning side in 1980, scoring twice in the competition. He was one of the most dangerous forwards in the German league during the 1980’s. His strike rate was very impressive scoring 136 goals in 224 games in the Bundesliga; in total he was awarded 21 caps for his nation.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge – West Germany
Rummenigge was one of the greatest stars of the 1980’s, but despite his fame and fortune luck deserted him on two occasions in his career. In both the 1982 and 1986 world cups he captained West Germany into the final. His strengths were his pace and mental attitude to the game both on and off the pitch. Rummenigge forced his way into the national squad in 1976 making his debut against Wales. He was included in the 1978 world cup squad, and he scored two goals in a first round demolition of Mexico. Rummenigge was always treated roughly by defenders. He won the European championships with Germany in 1980 and during the 1982 world cup; he was suffering from a leg injury. He featured in all their games in the 1982 finals excluding the semi- finals. Rummenigge, although not fully fit, led the West German’s out for the world cup final against Argentina. After the 1986 finals he retired from International football. Rummenigge was awarded with European footballer of the year in 1980 and 1981.
