Viktor Ponedelnik – Soviet Union

Viktor Ponedelnik is regarded by many as one of the greatest strikers to have ever emerged from the Soviet Union. He scored the winning goal in the 1960 European Championship final against Yugoslavia in extra time. He started his football career playing for his local club Rostselmash in 1956. He played on 29 occasions for his country and scored an impressive 20 goals. Viktor Ponedelnik retired from football in 1966; this was after undergoing surgery for appendicitis.

Lev Yashin – Soviet Union

Lev Yashin played in goal for the Soviets on a staggering 78 occasions and won the 1956 Olympics with them and the 1960 European Championships. He was regarded by many the best goalkeeper in the world at the time of the 1960 European Championships. He also participated in three world cups for USSR including the 1958, 1962 and 1966 finals. In 1963 he won the European Football player of the year award. In his 78 games in goal for the Soviets he only conceded 70 goals, which calculates to an average of below one goal a game.
